Pros & Cons

  • Very globally integrated. Regularly get to work on projects interstate and overseas.
  • The best thing is definitely the friendly environment and the people. They have supported me greatly throughout my first year of work and everyone is always willing to help out. I also love all the opportunities for personal and professional development, such as being able to upskill myself through a range of training and on-the-job learning. I have also been fortunate to be involved in different company initiatives outside of my project work and it has been a fulfilling experience meeting enthusiastic and like-minded individuals.
  • Breadth of opportunity in terms of projects, industries and career pathways.
  • Good culture, good people, opportunities/support for development, focus on HSE/wellbeing/work-life balance.
  • Absolutely love the culture and the people here. You couldn't have a more welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • The team (that comes into the office daily) is the best at teaching, they are knowledgeable and very compassionate. Lots of resources for informal learning. Young professionals network puts a lot of effort into their events. The processes and procedures are top quality.
  • For some people, the flexible working arrangements embraced can make it difficult for new starters to meet their teams.
  • Need to put yourself out there to uncover the really interesting/cool opportunities. Can be a plus or a minus depending on how extraverted you are.
  • Everything is online (although largely due to Covid).
  • As a large company, there is a lot of global communication which can be initially confusing. I believe the ANZ teams are working to streamline this process for new starters.
  • The decentralisation of their internal systems proves a little difficult to navigate, but this might just be the nature of working with global companies.

Career Prospects
I've seen people transition from interns to seniors within the business so there is a visible opportunity for career growth.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility
There are many sustainability and CSR initiatives in the company such as Plan Beyond and a focus on giving back to the community through volunteering, especially on STEAM-related activities.

Culture

Culture
My company's culture is the best I have ever experienced compared to other major engineering consultancies I've been at. Everyone is always very open to chat and help out wherever possible even if they do not always have the answers to all questions. The large size of the company is a huge bonus as there's always someone who can help you out and the hierarchy is relatively flat for such a big organisation. Despite COVID-19, there have been many virtual events to keep us all engaged, such as online games, well-being sessions, and coffee chats. The environment is inclusive and diverse here which is great for the sharing of ideas and collaboration amongst teams.

Diversity

Diversity
Jacobs appears to make it a priority to promote the needs of women, ethnic minorities and members of the LGBT community. This is reflected in the diversity of both the team as well as senior leadership positions.

Satisfaction
My role involves a mix of planning, modelling and engineering work every day. Every day is different and I have been fortunate to work with a diverse range of disciplines on projects. For example, some days would involve modelling existing and future scenarios while others would involve report writing, data analysis and site visits when needed. I have been gradually entrusted more responsibilities throughout the year and these experiences have been helpful with my personal and professional development.

Management
My immediate manager (team leader) is great! He is proactive and ensures that the projects I'm working on are what I want to be doing. He has shown me alternative career progressions rather than just being technical all the time. Communication is clear and I feel like I am a valued part of the team

Office Work Environment
The office is well set up with designated eating, relaxing, and meeting areas. The location is good as it's near a lot of key clients. The dress code is smart casual but since the covid lockdowns it's become more casual with a dress for the day approaches.

Recruitment
8.3
Recruitment
Personal. Invitation to an in-person interview was made by a phone call from a team line manager, the interview was held with two consultants, and the official offer was made over a coffee near the office with a line manager. Every effort was made to feel like genuine recruitment and not a transactional grad hire.

Work Hours

Work Hours
8 hours per day excluding lunch, so around 8.5hrs per day. Extremely flexible and open about where and how you get those hours done. Office policy is hybrid working - working from home and from the office in the way that works for you personally.
