Pros & Cons

  • Great support network including other graduates, learning buddy and mentor
  • Company culture, capacity for growth and flexible working.
  • Very flexible, great work life balance, great culture, lots of learning opportunities.
  • Company culture. Welcoming, encouraging, strong promotion of teamwork, great diversity in all areas.
  • Mentorship from senior developers in a flexible working environment.
  • Commute, but that's obviously out of everyone’s control.
  • When given so much freedom it can be hard to know which way to go. Fortunately, there are plenty of people happy to answer questions to help you find out.
  • The economy impacting internal hires and career growth.
  • When awesome people leave and join other companies.
  • The transition from acceleration -> crew rotations -> associate is very manual and not well supported. The individual graduate has to find their own way and sometimes it's a hit and miss where they end up.

After the initial "acceleration" phase of focusing on coding practices, we get places into existing teams to work with and learn within that environment. Once we have completed at least a couple of rotations, we are then able to join these teams as a junior level developer and progress from there.

In addition to initiatives undertaken at the company level, every employee is also given a day in a year where we can choose to volunteer at any organisation of our own choosing to give back to society.

Culture
We have a very open structure at MYOB - it isn’t too heavy and encourages working across verticals together (helix model) Culture is really collaborative. Spread across 8 locations (4 mains offices) in ANZ. We have communities within the organisation that allow us to bring our whole selves to work; planet, environment, belonging and pride. Our SLT are approachable, visible and get invoked with teams. Our values at MYOB are evident across team, business and events inside and outside work (innovative, collaborative, passion etc.)

As a graduate employee they want me to focus on growth mindset and practicing to be the best programmer I can be, fitting with their expectations. We are open with our expectations and learning objectives during standups. Daily pair programming with developers of all levels and teams gives us the opportunity to grasp multitude of different concepts and peer into the world of complex code bases.

Management
We have a mixed system of managers and mentors. Our managers are really people persons. They are our cheerleaders, always encouraging and motivating. Our mentors are our technical managers that help develop our technical skills and OKRs are done with mentors. Mentors dedicate a lot of their time to help us in our journey and from day 1 they are like our personal cheerleaders!

Recruitment
Graduates apply via our ATS and go through two stages via our testing provider Sova and then a final stage interview online with our team. At every stage of the way we tailor our communication ensuring they always know what is happening and what stage they are at (or if unsuccessful). Our assessments include videos of us speaking with them to allow human interaction and bulk address. Making sure they are feeling empowered and humanised. Our questions are aligned to our behaviours we’d expect to see for associate developers in MYOB.

The company does not pay the highest rate in the industry but it is ok for me as other benefits/consideration compensate for this.

Training

Training
The whole point of our grad program is to learn so we have lots of opportunities to learn. Informal training involves things like access to LinkedIn learning and we can often request whatever workshop we would like from members of the grad community. It terms of formal training, we have a learning budget that we can use to pay for books and courses.

Flexible in terms of location and time. We have core hours which, as a graduate cohort, we have set for ourselves. Within this we are only required in office one day a week which affords great flexibility

We actively have recycling bins, only print if needed, we are completing a certification for purposefully reducing footprint.
