Pros & Cons

  • Being able to work from home twice a week gives me a much better work-life balance and improves my productivity overall.
  • The company is very relaxed, with good worker benefits, and a positive culture. Everyone is committed to helping me develop. The work is interesting and varied. I feel like I am making a positive contribution to society.
  • They made us Interns feel very welcome from day one. Everybody has been extremely nice and inclusive; it is the best work culture I have ever experienced. We were also given the opportunity to learn about how other teams operate which is really helpful as we may find an area of work that we could be interested in working with in the future.
  • The people are the best thing about the company. My colleagues are clearly smart individuals who know what they are talking about. They are motivated and collaborative.
  • What I really enjoy about working at the FMA is firstly the purpose and objectives that the FMA base their work upon. As the purpose of the FMA is to ensure the conduct of market participants within New Zealand's financial markets are fair, transparent, and efficient, the projects you work on serve a great purpose towards helping financial institutions of all shapes and sizes, so your role and project are highly valued by your team and managers. Secondly, the work environment is incredible - everyone is kind, and willing to lend a hand when you need.
  • Nothing thus far!
  • My possible increase in remuneration is lower working here than at other potential workplaces that I could go to.
  • It is usually a good thing but sometimes I feel like the environment is so relaxed that my productivity starts to decrease.
  • I think the lack of meaningful work for me is what I think is the worst thing about the company. It is not to say that there wasn't meaningful work being done by the rest of my colleagues; rather it was my project was not fulfilling.
  • There is nothing horrible I have encountered working at the FMA. The only aspect maybe that sometimes the tenure of the internship can impose a limit at to how deeply you can research and complete your project. But besides from this, everything is great no issues I am aware of.

Us interns have been told that we will be told whether we are being offered a graduate role 1-2 weeks after we finish which is very promising as it means we do not need to go through the whole interview process again.

Corporate Social Responsibility
The FMA supports New Zealand's transition to an integrated financial system - one that looks beyond financial returns to also consider non-financial factors. Currently my project as with many others is about ensuring consumers get fair outcomes rather than focusing on allowing the sector to make as much money as possible to the detriment of the consumer

Culture
There are virtually no barriers to who I can talk to within the company. Higher ups in the organization are very approachable and we are encouraged to do so. The socializing among colleagues is great and everyone is always willing to lend a hand!

Great connection with TupuToa and team is quite diverse ethically and in terms of background.

My role involves completing two research projects, so most of the time I am working on these projects. I would also occasionally have some intern information and catch-up sessions accompanied with meeting with various stakeholders as part of the drafting of my research.

Managers are nice, and really great to work with. Honest, but their constructive feedback will help you to be on track with what you need to do.

Office Work Environment
I absolutely love the offices we work in. The office is nicely arranged, and the furniture is nicely placed. Monitors are in great working condition, and I have been able to work on a height adjustable desk for the first time. What a great way to allow employees to work flexibly and to their liking! The only thing is sometimes the air conditioning is a bit strong and I tend to feel good but not much I guess I can do as I don't think you can control it. But apart from that its great!

Recruitment
I really enjoyed my interview - it felt as if it was a conversation which made me very comfortable. The process was also very quick, finding out only a day or two after! I was asked quite a few questions. Some were usual generic interview questions such as 'Tell me about yourself", "what makes you want to work here", as well as some situational questions such as "tell me about a time when you created a solution to a problem", or "tell me a time when you were frustrated in a specific situation (or somewhere along those lines)"...

Pay is quite good for an internship. Also get "FMA days" over the Xmas break that aren't public holidays which ensures we get paid over that entire period. Their perks and benefits are fantastic - the fact they allow new employers to the company have annual leave is amazing and I have not heard of this before. the Christmas "gift of time" leave was also great, and I think even a lot of us interns really appreciated it. Very generous leave policies. sick leave is also great.

Training
Training was well planned out and was easy to access in my own time. However, I think a bit more training with using their customer management tool would have been helpful, but it was still easy to navigate.

Work Hours
The FMA has been very flexible with hours. There is some days where I would start work earlier and others where I would end earlier. This approach requires trust but with adequate oversight makes me my most productive.

Ensuring that companies are being truthful and accurate in their climate disclosures is a great way the FMA ensure a positive environmental impact.
