Financial Markets Authority Graduate Programs & Internships

  • Government & Public Service

We offer the best of both worlds. As a relatively young Crown Entity, we're right-sized to be innovative, agile and fast moving.

It's purposeful. FMA attracts people from all walks of life, who are at the top of their game. One thing that connects us is our genuine desire to work together to do right by New Zealanders.

It's supportive. You'll be welcomed by genuine people, who will readily share their knowledge and encourage you to make the most of every opportunity here.

It's stimulating. There's more than meets the eye, with a broad scope of work that will keep you interested and engaged. The unique perspective you'll gain across the financial services sector will continuously grow your skills and broaden your impact. Think KiwiSaver, consumer education, climate-related disclosures, financial inclusion right through to outcomes-focused regulation and everything in between.

Our culture is truly our real point of difference. You'll notice the approachability of even our most senior leaders, and that we're a people-first organisation. With our holistic learning and development programmes, we prioritise both your wellbeing and continued growth.

A great place to work. With great work to do.

Recruitment Process

  1. Online application - CV & Cover Letter. We're keen to hear about the authentic you, your motivations and what makes you tick.
  2. Initial interview. We'll invite you to respond to our pre-prepared interview questions via a user-friendly video platform.
  3. Online assessment. We'll ask you to complete a short assessment that takes a closer look at your problem-solving skills.
  4. Interactive interview. A behavioural based interview, where you will meet with two people from the FMA. Interviews are a two-way street and information will flow both ways. Remember it's an opportunity for you to gain further insights about us too!
  5. Reference checks & probity checks. As part of our background checking process, we'll ask for two references (ideally one academic and one other). Probity checks include a credit check and a criminal background check.
  6. Offer. The hiring team will make decisions on who will be offered a position and feedback will be provided regardless. If your application is successful, we'll give you a call to discuss the offer and send the offer details and documentation to review online.
  7. Onboarding. Ahead of your arrival, we’ll organise for you and your fellow graduates to have a smooth start with us, including setting up your access to our technology, tools and workspaces.
  8. Start. We’ve developed a comprehensive induction and ongoing learning & development programme to help you gain the context, networks, support, know-how and experiences to thrive at the FMA.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • Being able to work from home twice a week gives me a much better work-life balance and improves my productivity overall.
  • The company is very relaxed, with good worker benefits, and a positive culture. Everyone is committed to helping me develop. The work is interesting and varied. I feel like I am making a positive contribution to society.
  • They made us Interns feel very welcome from day one. Everybody has been extremely nice and inclusive; it is the best work culture I have ever experienced. We were also given the opportunity to learn about how other teams operate which is really helpful as we may find an area of work that we could be interested in working with in the future.
  • The people are the best thing about the company. My colleagues are clearly smart individuals who know what they are talking about. They are motivated and collaborative.
  • What I really enjoy about working at the FMA is firstly the purpose and objectives that the FMA base their work upon. As the purpose of the FMA is to ensure the conduct of market participants within New Zealand's financial markets are fair, transparent, and efficient, the projects you work on serve a great purpose towards helping financial institutions of all shapes and sizes, so your role and project are highly valued by your team and managers. Secondly, the work environment is incredible - everyone is kind, and willing to lend a hand when you need.
  • Nothing thus far!
  • My possible increase in remuneration is lower working here than at other potential workplaces that I could go to.
  • It is usually a good thing but sometimes I feel like the environment is so relaxed that my productivity starts to decrease.
  • I think the lack of meaningful work for me is what I think is the worst thing about the company. It is not to say that there wasn't meaningful work being done by the rest of my colleagues; rather it was my project was not fulfilling.
  • There is nothing horrible I have encountered working at the FMA. The only aspect maybe that sometimes the tenure of the internship can impose a limit at to how deeply you can research and complete your project. But besides from this, everything is great no issues I am aware of.

I kickstart my workday with a podcast-filled commute, grab my favorite iced americano, and dive into emails and meetings. A delicious lunch break at Sumthin Dumplin and a scenic walk around Britomart keep me energized. I wrap up the day by planning ahead and enjoy a snapshot of the team's hard work.
