Māori & Pasifika at Tatauranga Aotearoa | Stats NZ

Tatauranga Aotearoa Stats NZ is committed to partnering with Māori and Pasifika, both inside the organisation and with our external relationships.

How do we partner with Māori?

Tatauranga Aotearoa Stats NZ has been an active partner in the Te Hiku o Te Ika Iwi | Crown Social Development and Wellbeing Accord since its establishment in 2013. We have worked with the Te Hiku Trust and other agencies to steward the use of government data to provide an evidence base for Te Hiku development planning and monitoring. We partnered in the production of the first Te Hiku Wellbeing Report in 2014, and we are working with them now to review options for the production of the next Wellbeing Report and evaluation of programme outcomes.

We’ve been working with Ngai Tahu in the south island, a South Island Iwi, on the development of their Regional Data App. The iwi is using data from the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) in 2017.

We’ve been supplying data through Te Ara Takatū, (the iwi data agreement) to populate the Outcomes Framework for Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu using data from the census and Te Kupenga.

We are working with the Data Iwi Leaders Group, and technicians, from across the Iwi Chairs Forum, to understand the impact of not releasing official statistical counts of iwi affiliation from the 2018 Census and we’re exploring solutions for how the data can be used.

Rōpū Waiata Group

Our Rōpū Waiata group meets once a week to practice karakia and waiata. This is an opportunity for everyone in the organisation to come along and learn new karakia in a friendly and welcoming environment.

We have an organisation karakia and waiata which are often used at Stats-wide events.

Pacific People's Network Group

We have a Pacific People's Network Group which acts as a support group for:

all staff at Stats NZ
all internal Pacific groups – Pacific Engagement working Group and the Pacific Stats Support Programme Group
PP programmes, for example, The Pacific Island Attachment Programme
acknowledging or celebrating Pacifica Island Language Weeks
other established networks and groups
multi-cultural lunches and days.

Our way of support comes in many forms, from sharing our experiences, actively listening and bolstering up each other when needed, having a meal together, and of course, what we have always been known for – our loud laughter – one of life’s best medicines.

Pātaka - Our Māori Cultural App

Pātaka is an app Tatauranga Aotearoa Stats NZ has developed to support our people to improve capability in working with Māori. This app is called Pātaka.

A pātaka is a storehouse. We’re storing some information here about the Māori language (te reo Māori), some customs (tikanga Māori), and other resources to help us improve in our work and practices as an organisation. We are on a journey of continual improvement. We’re learning as we go.

Pātaka includes information on te reo Māori (the Māori language), tikanga (customs),mātāpono me ngā ūaratanga (principles and values), whakataukī (proverbs) and waiata (songs), to help you understand more about our unique and shared cultural heritage.
