Working in the metal recycling industry is unique, and you need to have the right mindset, but for those who get stuck in and don’t mind getting their hands dirty the rewards are enormous and career opportunities are always available.

What's your job about?

Sims Metal is a global metal recycling company that has a team environment where everyone is valued and respected. I help support the 11 business units with day-to-day operations from stock management to issues that may arise that require a second pair of eyes. Interacting with the staff on the floor and ensuring that they have a voice and that their worries and concerns are escalated to the right levels. This job is about ensuring consistency is spread across all business units so we are stepping toward a shared goal.

What's your background?

I grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand, and I have spent my entire life within the region, except for my two years in Napier & Auckland with Sims Metal. I attended St Bede’s college for 10 years as both a student and staff member within the boarding house. I followed my passion for sports, and as I studied, I realised I was passionate about event/business management, so I modified my degree pathway. I have been with the company for four years which I began as a graduate/cadet in  Christchurch learning under the yard manager. I then applied and accepted a role as a supervisor in Napier after two years with the business. After one year as a supervisor, I applied and accepted the role of NF Manager in Auckland before wanting to relocate home and accepting my current role.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, this role is about assisting and helping people. While a background within the metal recycling industry would be an advantage, anyone with the right attitude and drive could learn and pursue a career like my current role.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The job has many cool aspects, but being able to see results for your hard work would be the most rewarding part. We pour time and effort into processing the material and seeing the yard empty after a bulk export creates a sense of purpose and achievement. Building relationships with people and having the ability to not only discuss work, but also life in general in a safe and family environment.

Was there anything in your role that was unexpected?

Working in the metal recycling industry is unique, and you need to have the right mindset, but for those who get stuck in and don’t mind getting their hands dirty the rewards are enormous and career opportunities are always available.

Three pieces of advice for your university-self?

  • Believe in yourself; not only can you change a business, but you can also change the world with the right mindset.
  • Don’t be scared to put yourself out there.
  • It is better to have tried and failed than to never have tried at all.
