Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders at Sims Limited

Sims acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of this land and pays its respects to its Elders past, present and emerging.

Sims encourages all of our employees, customers and business partners to support our commitment as we continue to revitalise our community engagement, with particular emphasis on strengthening relationships with, and providing opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We will continue to develop awareness and respect within our organisation and amongst our employees for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures and achievements.

Reconciliation Action Plan

Throughout our history, Sims Metal has always understood the role we play in the communities in which we serve. This is reflected in our actions and many forms of support we provide, both formally and informally.

While our actions in this regard are commendable, we acknowledge that more can be achieved. In support of this, we are embarking on a journey to revitalise our community engagement strategy, with particular emphasis on strengthening relationships with, and providing opportunities for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Sims Metal acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and the Traditional Custodians of the land. We endeavour to be part of the solution for positive change.

Although our formal journey is just beginning, and acknowledging that much work lies ahead, we believe that Sims Metal can make a difference through our direct actions, as well as our ability to champion and influence for positive change.

We will continue to develop awareness and respect within our organisation and among our employees for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures and achievements.

To support our aims and to build upon the good work already undertaken across our business, we have developed our first ever Reflect RAP in order to provide the vision and framework necessary to deliver meaningful outcomes.

We have developed a Reflect RAP with the support of our RAP Working Group, who represent employees across the organisation. Our RAP Working Group is committed to deliver meaningful and sustainable outcomes for our business.

Our Five Pillars

The Pillars of Alignment allow our organisation to reflect on our impact on the world, the communities in which we operate, our partners, customers and employees.

The heart of our business can be found in the people who work in our organisation.

We endeavour to infuse our purpose into all aspects of our business.

Our purpose is the lens through which we can test our decision-making, business strategies and our own behaviours to ensure that everything we do going forward is aligned to our shared vision.

We aim to be a leader in our industry by continuing to build on our commitment to reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

The actions we take towards Reconciliation will always aim to deliver meaningful impact for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

To achieve our goals we will continue to build strong relationships within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in which we operate.

Sims Metal will engage in cultural awareness training to ensure all our personnel work in a culturally appropriate workplace, which will become part of Sims Metal story.

NAIDOC Week 2022

The 2022 NAIDOC Week theme is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! and serves as a reminder to continue to keep rallying and advocating for systemic changes to close the gap for an equitable and reconciled future.

Considering the NAIDOC Week theme this year, here are a few ways Sims Limited has recognised this sentiment, and will continue, getting up, standing up and showing up.

  • Sims Limited businesses in Australia have all become members of Supply Nation, connecting the company to Indigenous suppliers
  • Sims Metal has formalised a Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to establish and strengthen mutually beneficial relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders and organisations
  • The company hosted ceremonial events at Australian sites to acknowledge National Reconciliation Week 2022

Strengthening Our Commitment to Diversity by Joining Supply Nation

Sims Limited recently became a member of Supply Nation, the main organisational body that represents and certifies Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses in Australia.

Supply Nation is a non-profit organisation that aims to grow the Indigenous business sector through the promotion of supplier diversity by facilitating and encouraging business between corporations, government agencies and Indigenous-owned businesses in Australia.

Sims Limited's membership in this professional organisation reinforces our commitment to recognising diversity as a key criterion both within our workforce and procurement processes, as well as delivers on a commitment made in Sims Metal's Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), to establish and strengthen mutually beneficial relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders and organisations.
