What it does: EY is a global leader in assurance, tax, transaction and advisory services which includes providing audit, tax, business risk, technology and security risk services, and human capital services worldwide.

Mission: At EY, their mission is to build a better working world by providing quality services to build trust and confidence in capital markets and economies globally, all while delivering their promises to their beloved stakeholders.

Size and presence: As one of the Big Four Accounting firms, EY employs 312,250 people worldwide in more than 150 countries.

Best known for: EY is known for being one of the largest professional services networks in the world providing services to big name clients, alongside being one of the most sought firms to work for as they are considered as part of the Big Four Accounting firms.

The good bits: EY continues to be a household name in its field, serving as a tax auditor and tax adviser to Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon alongside other big name brands. The company continues to expand its reach, cement itself as a global leader and shows no sign of slowing down.

The not-so-good bits: Employees have reported the environment being quite fast-paced and you may have long hours during some periods which can make it difficult to maintain a good work-life balance.

The Ernst & Young Story

Ernst & Young was a result of many accounting firms' mergers over the last century and a half. Starting in 1903, the firm Ernst & Ernst was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, by Alwin C. Ernst, and his brother, Theodore Ernst. Then, in 1906, Arthur Young & Co. was set up by a Scotsman accountant, Arthur Young, in Chicago. These two began merging with other firms, Young with Broads Paterson & Co.; and Ernst with the aforementioned Whinney Smith & Whinney.  However, in 1989, almost a decade later, Ernst & Whinney merged with the fifth largest firm globally at the time, Arthur Young & Co., to create the famous company we know today, Ernst & Young. From there, Ernst & Young continued to heavily expand its practice, gaining valuable big-name clients, extending its product portfolio and opening up new centres in countries all over the world.

Recruitment process

Internships

Aspiring interns can apply for a summer internship that is recommended for undergraduate students in their final year and are able to work in their placement location for the entire duration. To begin your application, navigate to the careers section of the EY website where you can filter by country, location, area and start year. Once you have chosen your position, you would have to create an account and enter the details they request such as your personal details, experience and qualifications alongside the required documents.

Then, they would let you know if you are moving on to Stage 2 which is the online assessments. Here, you will be asked to complete a number of assessments ranging from MCQs and numerical reasoning tests and once you’re done, you will be told if you’re progressing to the next stage which is Job Simulation.

Job simulation is all about exploring your role and strengths by answering a variety of timed and untimed questions using real work-based scenarios. You will also receive personalised feedback and then be informed whether you can move on to the EY Experience Day Stage where you will be able to mingle with others and also be informed whether you received the position which will then lead to the onboarding process.

For Fresh Graduates

Graduates looking to join one of the Big Four Accounting Firms will first have to navigate to the careers page and choose their position of choice. Then,  you may read the job description to see if you are fit for the role and click on the apply button which will prompt you to register for an account to proceed with your online application. You will be asked to fill in your candidate profile with the required details and the company will let you know when they receive your information and if your application meets their requirements which will lead to an invitation to an interview.

Your interview experience may be a combination of in-person, phone and video wherein you get a chance to let them know your strengths and experiences while also gaining information about the company. Depending on your position, you may be asked to complete a written assessment, either online or at a testing centre.

And, if you successfully complete the interview process and the hiring managers believe this is the right place for you, you will be offered a formal job offer and may begin the onboarding process dedicated to your department.

Career prospects

EY offers all employees personalised career development wherein you are encouraged to step out of your comfort zone and be exposed to different clients in different industries. The company provides a multitude of learning and development opportunities such as The EY Tech MBA which allows our people to develop the technology, leadership and business skills they need from anywhere in the world to EY Badges wherein you earn digital badges for future-focused skills such as data visualisation, data science and artificial intelligence (AI). Through these programs, you are able to upskill and remain relevant in the industry and this lets your seniors know of your commitment which can greatly help you in scaling up the ladder in the company. With effort and the eagerness to learn, even an entry-level employee can prove themselves ready for a higher position.
