For graduates, the entire hiring process involves an online leetcode style assessment, multiple phone interviews with a recruiter, and then 5 face-to-face interviews (3 technical, 2 soft).

The hiring process was very smooth. I completed a total of 6 interviews (including an initial phone screening). These included both technical, behavioural, and company-fit interviews. They were all with very lovely Atlassian's and my main recruiter (Izzy Iglesia) was the loveliest person. I don't think I've ever been through a better recruitment process.

Atlassian pours a lot of care into the interview process for candidates. They always make an effort to work around your schedule, especially if its filled with uni classes. They are constantly taking in feedback and using it to improve.

The interview process was quite long when I interviewed in 2021 as an intern. We had many stages, starting from a technical screen, behavioural, into 2 technical rounds before a final manager interview.

There were 3 rounds of interviews, plus a phone screening. Each of the rounds had a coding section, and 2 of the rounds had management/interpersonal type interviews. The questions were super fair and made good assessments about my skill and character.

For the leetcode style questions, they were standard algorithm and data structure based equations e.g. sorting an array. In the phone interviews, it was about why I would want to work for Atlassian, and which Atlassian values do I connect with the most. Technical face-to-face interviews varied depending on what stack you were interviewing for, and the soft-skill based interviews were mainly about the Atlassian values.

In my technical interviews I was asked the standard technical coding questions, i.e. code this system with these requirements, and the requirements steadily get more complicated. Or code this solution to a problem in a given time and ensure adequate testing etc. In my behavioural interviews I was asked how my values align with Atlassian and to give anecdotal evidence of my experiences. I was also asked about how I've dealt with different experiences in the past and what I learnt from them.

For the coding questions, they were relatively standard Data Structures and Algorithms questions, with the goal of understanding how I problem solve and think about problems. For the management questions, it was questions more about my experience working in teams, or solving problems or managing conflict in my past roles.

Do you have any specific tips and advice for candidates applying to your company? How would you recommend they best prepare?
I recommend candidates thoroughly study technical fundamentals and make sure they have a good understanding of the language they're taking the assessment in.

Know the Atlassian values. During technical interviews, talk through your thinking and why you are going about a certain approach etc. We don't really care about whether you complete the technical question or not, it's more about how you work as a software engineer.

Be your authentic selves in the behavioural interviews but do make sure to prepare by really trying to find how you and your experience aligns with Atlassian's values. Atlassian truly does feel like a company that has hired people based on who they are, rather than what they can do. This has meant that everyone wants to work and build for the company because they are driven by the culture and the privilege of being at such a great place. Keep this in mind for the behavioural interviews. For the technical interviews, make sure to practice and walk through in your head how you would build a solution to a given problem, make sure to include testing, this is very important. Don't be scared to ask questions, diagnosing a problem in realtime and building a solution is a far more valuable trait in the workplace than just assuming you know the right way forward and building from start to finish (especially if it means finding out you were wrong at the end).

Definitely read the Glassdoor interview reviews as people are constantly sharing tips and their interview questions. Other than that, the advice to "Just be yourself" is very cliche but will take you far.

For graduates: focus on the values/management interview, as long as you nail that you should be fine. They're quite forgiving with coding interviews.

I would recommend familiarising yourself with Atlassian's mission and values. This helps form an idea of whether you fit into the company or not. I would also recommend preparing for technical and analytical questions, as they can be a bit difficult.

Just be honest and transparent. Do leet code and if you don't know something, tell them but also them how you would go about trying to solve it
