Both internships gave me totally different experiences and allowed me to see first-hand the broad range of opportunities that Downer has to offer. These internships were my first experiences working in the construction industry.

I’m currently completing my first graduate rotation in the Structures and Temporary Works team. This is an office-based technical design role, which is again a different experience from my previous two summer internships. A typical day starts for me with an online meeting checking in with the team that is based all around the country. I spend the rest of my day working on temporary works designs for projects all over the country. Each design has different requirements but generally entails detailed calculations referring to the relevant design code, 3D modelling and completing a set of construction drawings.

I completed both of my summer internships with Downer. Both internships gave me totally different experiences and allowed me to see first-hand the broad range of opportunities that Downer has to offer. These internships were my first experiences working in the construction industry. I found that I liked the fast pace nature and being able to see things being built on-site, these opportunities as an intern were why I decided to join the graduate programme.

My advice for new interns would be to take advantage of the many opportunities that will come your way as an intern. For me, this was relocating to a different part of the country. This allowed me to grow professionally and personally. Saying yes and gaining as much experience as possible will help you when deciding to join the graduate programme and it will also help you to become a well-rounded engineer.
