Experienced hospitality personnel are hard to come by in New Zealand. If you've always wanted to work in this field but have been put off by a lack of expertise, Hospo Start can help you develop the skills you need to get started!

If you enjoy connecting with people from all walks of life, want the freedom and mobility to travel while continuing to develop your skill set, and want to advance your career, a job in the hospitality business is ideal.

The Restaurant Association and the Ministry of Social Development collaborated to develop the Hospo Start program, which teaches newcomers to the profession the fundamentals of hospitality.

The Restaurant Association's Hospo Start program prepares participants for job (or re-employment) in the hospitality business over the course of four weeks, with the ultimate goal of finding paid employment. Employer-driven training has been developed in cooperation with the industry and its requirements. Participants will get vital insight into a career in the business as well as key skills for finding work and continuing their study in the field. The course has been designed by the Restaurant Association to reflect the main skill set required for hospitality job seekers, and it is taught through a combination of practical and hands-on learning.

What will students receive?

Participants will receive the following:

  • An Overview of Hospitality
  • Customer service education
  • Food safety education
  • Training for baristas
  • Training in food preparation
  • Practice of Serving Beverages
  • Qualifications for Licence Controllers (LCQ)
  • Certificate in Hospitality First Aid

Participants will leave with a positive attitude, basic skills, and a desire to work in the hospitality industry, as well as knowledge of and experience in a range of food and beverage and kitchen roles.

The Hospo Start program focuses on developing students and job seekers with a positive attitude toward work and a desire to learn, as well as basic hospitality skills. Following completion, participants will be actively aided in finding employment, with pastoral care and mentorship provided throughout the first three months of employment.
