Design program at Xero

Design programs at Xero include roles in our product design and digital design teams. This year, we're hiring for roles in product design, design research, and a production coordinator in the media team.

The grad program is a permanent role at Xero. After completing the grad year, you'll be promoted into the next stage of your chosen career path.

Given the specialist nature of the roles, you'll spend the entire program with the same team working on different projects and building up your skillset to progress your career in your chosen field.

We are only able to accept one application per candidate, so please think carefully about which role you'd like to apply for. If you would like to chat with a Xero employee before applying, find out how and when you can meet the team.

The roles

Product designers help shape our products. We understand how people use Xero, then we work with cross-disciplinary teams to build the most delightful and effective experiences.

We think about the entire Xero experience, from tiny interface details to making our customers' lives' better. We're interested in how someone uses a design, not just the look of a button or screen.

As a graduate product designer, you'll be responsible for designing the interface architecture, workflow, and visual design of our product.

The product design team challenges assumptions and ideas to make the software helpful and easy to use. We work through ideas and designs with customers, engineers, researchers, writers, and product managers, and we prototype experiences quickly.

What we need from you

You'll be a great listener and able to put yourself in other people's shoes. You'll have an analytical side and a knack for crafting beautiful user experiences.

We're looking for applicants with a design degree, including digital, visual communications, graphic, industrial, interaction, and media design.

Ideally, you'll:

  • be an excellent communicator and team player
  • be a problem solver who can take a logical, analytical approach while being user-focused
  • be creative, agile, motivated and passionate people
  • like to question the status quo and take initiative

If this sounds like you, get in touch! We'd love to hear from you.

How to apply

We'll need a copy of your CV, cover letter, portfolio and links to online projects, your website or Behance pages and anything else you want to show us. We'll also need a copy of your academic transcript – we know it won't be complete until the end of the year, so just send us everything so far.

In your portfolio, you should include examples of a few projects you've worked on that you're proud of, including some web or app projects.

We want your portfolio to:

  • show how you have identified and solved problems with design
  • explain some of your design process
  • show how users interact with your design, using InVision or a video of the interface

For the first interview, we'll ask you to prepare a case study in advance and take us through the process. We'll send you more information on what to prepare beforehand.

You need to be a citizen or permanent resident to apply. We'll need a copy of your passport and/or visa for a start date in Feb 2022.

The recruitment process

Applications open 1 May 2021 and close on 31 July 2021.  We will review applications after 31 July and invite candidates to interview for these roles in August 2021.

It might feel like a long time when you're waiting to hear back, but we will get back to you. We have a lot of applications to work through and want to spend time looking at every single one.
Xero is an NZ Immigration Accredited Employer and Rainbow Tick certified too.

Please include a cover letter in your application, telling us why you're a great fit for this position.
