Why become a Westpac graduate

Westpac NZ has been part of the fabric of Aotearoa for 150 years, and we’re proud to serve our 1.3 million customers every day. We’re here to help all New Zealanders succeed, and that includes you.

During your time in our graduate programme there will be a lot to learn, going well beyond banking into what we’re doing to support our customers and communities. We’ll give you all the tools and support you need to learn and grow.

Leading you to success

We want your time as a graduate to be a fun and rewarding experience. We want to challenge you and help you discover what you’re passionate about by spending time with teams across many parts of our business. Expect to contribute from day one and have a real impact on what we do.

Why is joining the Westpac family so great?

After completing 12 months in our graduate programme, we’ll work with you to create a pathway to your next role.

  • You’ll get to experience a wide range of roles that will help you develop new skills and take on challenges that are important to you;
  • A competitive employee benefits package – a great starting income, wellbeing support, banking benefits, and more;
  • Proactive approach to your growth, through on-the-job learning, mentoring, development and support.

We know that every person in our Westpac family is unique. Our culture of inclusion, diversity and accessibility allows all our people to bring their full selves to work and thrive in both their personal and professional lives.

We lead the business community on issues that are important to us. We were the first bank in New Zealand to earn the Rainbow Tick, become Living Wage-accredited, achieve the Accessibility Tick and become Dementia Friendly. We use our strength as a lender to fund projects and initiatives that are helping fight climate change and reduce inequality. And our support of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter has been keeping Kiwi communities safe for nearly 40 years.

Westpac is looking for people who:

  • Love what they do
  • Love to go the extra mile and serve our customers in the best way possible
  • Embrace digital technology
  • Are resilient, learning orientated and enjoy new challenges
  • Are professional and accountable
  • Are diverse, flexible and inclusive

Westpac is looking for people who:

  • Are open-minded and keen to learn new skills;
  • Believe in Westpac’s purpose of helping New Zealanders succeed;
  • Love to go the extra mile and help our customers in the best way possible;
  • Show initiative and a collaborative attitude to taking on new challenges;
  • Are willing to constructively challenge and find better ways of working;
  • Have a flexible and inclusive mindset.

Employee benefits

Our people love working with us because we’re invested in helping them thrive and achieve their goals. In 2021, we introduced five days of annual Wellbeing Leave for all our people to look after themselves and their families, alongside generous parental leave and a robust Return to Work programme. There are also opportunities for a formal career break of up to 12 months - for further study, travel or whatever else that might be!

We also offer discounted rates on our banking products and medical insurance, an employee care program to enhance your mental and physical wellbeing, and the option to purchase leave if you want to.

Recruitment Process

  1. Make your application.  Apply online and make sure you attach your CV and academic transcript (an unofficial transcript is fine).  You’ll be invited to complete an online assessment. This will help determine your suitability for the role and alignment with our values and culture.
  2. Video interview.  Here’s your chance to shine. Treat this as you would a formal interview. Test your mic and camera, do your homework, and dress as you would for work.
  3. Phone interview.  We look forward to speaking with you regarding your interest in our programme and sharing further insights on the opportunity.
  4. Experience Lab. Meet us and our past graduates. You can ask burning questions and decide whether we’re the right organisation for you.  The event will be in person at our Head office in Britomart Auckland.
  5. The decision. We’ll contact you about our decision. If you know your future is with Westpac, we’ll need your acceptance within seven days.

We are looking to fill our program with original thinkers and innovators from all areas of study.

Remuneration & Career Growth

  • Base salary of NZD $65,000pa
  • 4 weeks of standard holiday + 5 additional days of well-being leave to support you to be your best
  • Flexible, hybrid working arrangements

  • Banking benefits and insurance discounts
  • 2 Volunteer days per year

We’ll provide loads of learning and support to help you make the most of the experience with sessions that accelerate both your personal and professional career development.

The programme is packed full of different roles, teams and project experiences, and you’ll complete two rotations during the programme to help you learn about different parts of your business area.
