SIG: AT THE FOREFRONT OF QUANTITATIVE TRADING

SIG is a leading global quantitative trading firm founded by a group of friends with a shared passion for game theory and probabilistic thinking. SIG began in 1987 when the founders learned to apply the same quantitative decision-making techniques used in gaming to the capital markets.  Today, with more than 3,000 employees globally, SIG trades almost every financial product across markets around the world, with some of the most sophisticated proprietary trading technology in the industry.

Culture of Gaming

SIG’s trading philosophy continues to be based on the application of game theory, statistics, and decision science to make rational decisions in an environment of uncertainty. This philosophy is integral in their education programs and the firm's overall culture.

The firm hosts an annual No-Limit Texas Hold’em poker tournament for employees. All of SIG’s employees are encouraged to learn the game of poker, through our classes for beginners and participation in the tournament, since it teaches valuable lessons about making good decisions under conditions of uncertainty.   Fun fact: two of SIG’s employees, Bill Chen and Jerrod Ankenman, are WSOP (World Series of Poker) bracelet winners.

Trading at SIG

SIG primarily engages in two types of trading: systematic and semi-systematic.

Systematic trading, also known as algorithmic trading or high frequency trading, uses algorithms that make trading decisions based on data from the outcome of past trades and the factors that led to those outcomes.

Semi-systematic trading uses components of systematic trading, but in these activities our traders also step in to make changes and adjust course when there is new information in dynamic markets in order to make the best decisions possible.

Strategically utilizing both types of trading is what has made SIG one of the largest trading firms in the world.

Working at SIG

These are a few key tenets that we believe make up what it is like to work at SIG.

Make good decisions: SIG believes in a rigorous and analytical approach to decision making. SIG teaches people how to think, not what to think.

Relentlessly problem solve: SIG employees share a deep desire to take on the world’s toughest problems.

Collaborate: SIG believes that working together always yields better results than working alone. SIG designs work environments to promote communication, discourse, and debate and cultivates an environment free of bureaucracy. They encourage everyone to share ideas regardless of whether they have been at SIG for 10 days or 10 years. The best idea always wins.

Harness expertise and potential: SIG values the expertise of the people they hire and reward people who are willing to push themselves and offer new solutions.

Continue to learn: To remain on the cutting of trading and technologySIG expects employees to have a curious mindset and desire to learn throughout their careers. Classes are offered to new hires to learn about the financial markets, decision making, and strategy games like poker.

Recruitment Process

SIG offers early discovery, internship, and full-time programs for students at the undergrad, masters, and PhD level across Trading, Technology, Quantitative Research, Equity Research and Operations. They typically hire students with degrees in Maths, Statistics, Engineering, IT & Computer Sciences, Machine Learning, Finance and Sciences.

SIG’s interview process is designed to learn more about you, your skillset, and the type of role that interests you, while you learn more about what it is like to be part of SIG. Interviewers will gather information about your strengths, your interests, and the kinds of problems you like to solve. Don’t be surprised if they consider you for many open roles – SIG is known for getting a holistic picture of candidates in the interview process to determine their best fit.

  2. Online Assessment (Assessing quantitative and problem-solving skills)
  3. Phone/Virtual Interviews (Behavioural and technical)
