I have had the exciting opportunity & privilege to work at Powerco, an electricity and gas distribution company in New Zealand delivering energy to around 1.1m customers (across 442,000 homes, businesses and organisations) in the North Island.
As a part of my graduate rotation, I move across different teams such as Network development, Design, Asset fleet, Protection Engineering, Network Operations, Service delivery, Network transformation. It has been an exciting learning curve so far.
I was born in India and bred in the Middle East. In 2015, I moved to New Zealand for a new start and an exciting university experience at Auckland University of Technology.
I have always been proactive from my childhood till date. I explored a wide range of career options from Cinematography to Electrical Engineering. My parent’s background and values has always been hugely impacting my affinity and clarity for STEM education.
My mother studied Master of Science, majoring in remote sensing and eventually moved to Media to pursue her passion. I have always envied her agility and commitment.
My father moved from working at the Air Force to becoming the Regional Director of a Dutch company that operates globally across 40+ countries. He has always been inspiring me to learn, grow and chase success!
Both, have encouraged me to always step out of my comfort zone and to dream, aspire, travel the world, most importantly, to face failures and comeback after every setback.
I interned in Siemens, Dubai in the Power Generation services team in my penultimate year. And that’s when I discovered my passion for the Energy Industry before I joined Powerco in 2018!
Could someone with a different background do your job?
Though an electrical engineering qualification is preferred, anyone with a strong base in Mathematics, and passion for the Power industry. The Grad Programme has always been a well-structured learning platform. Some common skills across most of our graduates are Strategic agility, drive for results, decision quality, Analytical thinking and strong communication skills
What's the coolest thing about your job?
Apart from my graduate job responsibilities, I initiated in organising STEM Case Challenge competition at University level to encourage and help students experience the industry before they step into it.
I have received tremendous support from different people at Powerco to fit my goals into my daily work. Powerco has definitely helped me heighten my career aspirations and develop an all-rounder profile.
The moments that make me feel very belonging in the company is when I can approach anyone easily and receive interest and support work on things, I am passionate about!
What are the limitations of your job?
I studied a lot of different papers (Real time systems, Digital Signal processing, Renewable energy. etc.) at University. It does get a bit challenging for sometimes to spend extra time on learning certain Power related pre-requisites before I commence work on a project. But I have always received guidance to prep well enough before a new rotation!
