Help shape the future of Education

At the Ministry of Education, we work together to shape an education system that delivers equitable and excellent outcomes.

Our organisation is made up of more than 3,000 talented and committed people around New Zealand, from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures.

While we work in different groups and on different things, we all strive every day to make the biggest difference we can for every child, young person and adult student in our education system.

About our group and team

In the Business Enablement and Support group, we deliver well-connected, efficient and effective corporate services that enable our people to do their best work every day. The essential services, support, tools and resources we provide help make the Ministry a great place to work.

The Payroll Assistant Advisor role is a member of the Payroll team, which is located in the Finance Group. The Payroll team delivers a payroll service to all Ministry employees. The Payroll team also provides support and advice to employees and payroll related information to the business and external agencies.

About this role

An opportunity to kick-start your HR career
Situated in Wellington CBD
Learn from experienced and enthusiastic professionals
You would be working with a team that is very experienced and is keen to provide coaching to an individual who wishes to learn. This is a fantastic opportunity to be in an environment where you are surrounded by experienced professionals and have the opportunity to learn about the payroll function as well as HR as a whole.

The successful applicant will be responsible for processing changes to employee records including general data changes, new hires and terminations and answering employee pay and leave queries. The Ministry of Education Payroll team processes a high volume of payroll changes each fortnight and the successful applicant will be trained to complete changes across the full range of payroll activities.

About you

Prior experience not necessary but a willingness to learn is a must
Verbal and written communication skills vital
Organisation and time management skills are also essential
The environment our team operates in is a very busy one and requires quality time management to navigate effectively. We are looking for someone who prides themselves on being organised which will allow them to efficiently go about their work. You will be working with a wide range of stakeholder and therefore high quality communication skills are vital.

You must be a competent user of Microsoft Office and be a fast and willing learner. You will need to be proactive and be confident in asking questions when you are unsure. To be successful in the role you will be eager and willing to learn. This is an opportunity where experience isn't expected, therefore you should not be afraid to ask questions.

The Payroll team has a strong culture that strives to deliver excellence in customer service and the successful applicant would ideally demonstrate those behaviours.

The busy environment best suits a person who works well as part of a team and demonstrates that they are willing to contribute to ensure that the team objectives are met.

You will also offer the ability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga.

Are you ready to make a difference?

We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds, including Māori, Pacific and those with disabilities, who will enrich our understanding of the education system.

As a government agency, the Ministry is committed to keeping to the Treaty of Waitangi's guiding principles in our work for and with Māori students, their whānau, hapū and iwi.

I have been so lucky in my education throughout my life. Without it I would be a completely different person, and seeing such a concrete (sometimes literally) symbol of access to education for someone is genuinely wonderful to me.
