Whenever I explain my role to someone, the first thing that comes to mind is “my job is to make the streets of Auckland safer for you”.

What's your job about?

Johnstaff is one of the largest employee-owned Consultancy Firms, specialising in providing Project Management, Construction, Advisory and cost management Services. The majority of our work is with Government Organisations, with offices based all over Australia and New Zealand.

Currently, my role at Johnstaff as a Project Manager involves me delivering and coordinating projects around the wider Auckland region to provide a safe and sustainable transportation network for all road users, including pedestrians. My main focus is safety and doing my best to ensure that patrons reach their destination with zero harm. On a day-to-day basis, I’m working on the delivery of projects, project investigations, consultation, client liaison and road safety audits, to name a few.

Whenever I explain my role to someone, the first thing that comes to mind is “my job is to make the streets of Auckland safer for you”.

What's your background?

I’ve spent the majority of my life in East Auckland after moving to New Zealand from Iraq in 1996.

Growing up in an engineering/mechanically minded family I always had a passion for engineering, hence I decided to study Engineering at the University of Auckland. It was during my third year at university where I found my passion for Transportation Engineering. I was fortunate enough to get experience working for a contractor, client and consultant in my first three years following my Bachelor’s degree.

I joined Johnstaff, New Zealand in 2019 after deciding I wanted to give project management a go. This is one of the best decisions I have made for my career and have never looked back.

I have always had a passion for football and have played it all my life. In 2019 I was selected to represent New Zealand in Futsal for the Oceania World Cup Qualifiers. That is one of my greatest personal achievements as it took a lot of blood, sweat and tears (literally).

Could someone with a different background do your job?

100% yes! If you have the right attitude and mentality you will fit in perfectly in this role.

Some important aspects of this role are organisation, time management, problem solving and communication. If you enjoy a new challenge with a lot of face-to-face interactions you will love this job.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The reason I’m able to get up every morning and come to work is that I’m always kept on my toes. I’m being challenged everyday and the project scopes are endless. One of my mantras is “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you”. Another aspect I enjoy about my job is that I’m not locked inside the office all day. I get to move around a lot! On a daily basis I’m moving around and meeting with contractors, clients and other consultants.

What are the limitations of your job?

Every now and again I find myself working long hours to meet deadlines. I find this reasonable as it’s not every day. When deadlines and tasks are completed ahead of schedule, I also have the freedom to leave work and do as I please. Essentially, there’s a fantastic work-life balance at Johnstaff.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Whatever you feed grows. At first it might seem like you’re adding crumbs but eventually you’ll have an entire biscuit!
  • No matter what you’re doing in life, make sure it’s done to the best of your ability.
  • Be patient. If you want something bad enough, you will instinctively know exactly what you need to do to achieve it.
