The main limitation, however, is whatever you limit yourself to. If you are willing to learn and not take things personally, then you can learn more and thrive.

What discipline and cohort (i.e. 2018 or 2019) are you in?

Safety, 2019.

Provide an overview of all your rotations to date:

I am on my first rotation on the TSE (Tunnel Station and Excavation) project – Marrickville Dive site.

What does your typical workday look like?

Once I arrive on site, I make sure that the VMP (vehicle management plan) is current. I check my emails prior to pre-start in case there may be something that needs to be communicated to all workers.

Part of my tasks includes logging on to the pre-start scanner and making sure that people are scanning on and attending daily pre-starts. On Mondays, toolbox talks are carried out prior to/ after the daily pre-start. After pre-starts, I carry out site inductions followed by site inspections.

What has been the most interesting thing about your job?

Everything has been interesting for me as it is my first time in the construction industry and my first time working in the safety space. The enthusiasm shown by workers to explain what they do allows me to not only build rapport with them but to learn their job too!

What are the limitations of your role?

Sometimes, some people don’t take you seriously because you are a graduate. The main limitation, however, is whatever you limit yourself to. If you are willing to learn and not take things personally, then you can learn more and thrive.

What is something you wish you knew before you started?

I wish I knew how to manage time better before I started. At the start of my rotation, I almost burnt out. However, I did get a lot of support on site and at head office to manage my time better.

How did you prepare for starting on the Graduate Program?

I made sure I had enough rest before starting. I travelled and in my spare time read construction material, so I could understand things better.
