IBM Story

Herman Hollerith, a young German immigrant who worked for the US census, developed a punching machine that speeded up the census process. His invention was used for the 1890 census and delivered a good result.  After this success, he set up his own company, “Tabulating Machine.”
After several mergers with other companies, the form of what would become IBM began to take shape. When the company, now Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, was going through a financial crisis, Thomas J. Watson took over and helped change its financial situation. In 1924 changed its name–the International Business Machines (IBM).

IBM was dedicated to manufacturing all kinds of machinery: industrial scales, clocks, and even meat or cheese cutters. Little by little, the company focused on electronics and computing until, in 1981, it decided to put its first personal computer on the market.

That first IBM computer was a great success. It was the computer that gave rise to the standard and that ensured the development of the computer industry. The fame the company had achieved since its inception was translated into trust towards its new model, the IBM PC.

Not even the company itself imagined the success it experienced. Revenues of $240,000 were expected in five years, a figure that was exceeded in just one month. Although it was not the most competitive computer. The IBM computer then was neither the highest quality nor the cheapest, it was the best-selling computer, and that placed IBM as the leading company in the sector.

However, that leadership was short; IBM was only at the top for just over two years. The competition became too strong, and the company struggled to keep up. However, they have been standing strong over the years and have been in service.

IBM staff call themselves "IBMers." According to various surveys on IBM work culture, 87% of IBM employees say they're given many responsibilities.
Also, 85% said that graduates are made to feel welcome when they join the company, and people care about each other a lot.

Finally, 57% of IBM employees prefer working in IBM to other U.S companies as they can take time off work if necessary.
