Katja Feary

6:30am

I wake up and quickly get myself out of bed before I decide to snooze my alarm. I then get ready and head out the door by 7:30am to take a nice stroll along the waterfront to work. When the weather is good I love walking to work to get some fresh air in the morning. It’s also a great way to relax before getting stuck into a busy day.

8.00am

I arrive at the office, turn on my computer and then make myself some breakfast - my go to is usually some cereal with fruit! After that I settle down at my desk and read through some emails. I usually have quite a few from my Australian colleagues from the night before. I’ll have a quick catch up with my colleagues around me about our weekend, its great having the other graduates around as we all get along very well.

9.00am – 11.00am

My mornings are often filled with meetings and catching up on some work, whether it’s organising some events that are coming up or finding some new customer stories that we can use for communications either internally or externally. A lot of my work can often come from the people around me requesting help with something, whether it’s creating brochures for their offerings or organising an event for them.

11.00am – 12.30pm

My Australian colleagues are usually at work by now (they are about 2 hours behind) so I find myself on different skype meetings and calls catching up with everyone and setting priorities for the week. It’s also a good time for me to feed back into the Australian team what has been happening in New Zealand. Despite being within the same company, it can be quite difficult to know what’s going on in each office especially when the offices are located in different countries, therefore it is handy to have someone in different locations to feedback news and potential customer references. Once a fortnight we will have a wider marketing team catch up where the head of marketing can catch everyone up on the higher-level strategies of marketing and what she has been working on lately. It is very helpful to understand the over-arching goals of the team as you can then align your work and goals with these.

12.30pm

Lunchtime! Most days I will have a quick lunch at my desk and then take a stroll down the street to look at the shops. I find it is quite good to get out of the office to stretch my legs, even if it is only for 10 minutes. Some days I will treat myself to a lunch out at one of the amazing cafés that Wellington has to offer.

1.00pm

Back to work. At 1:30pm on Tuesdays I will have a catch up call with the comms team. This is a great way to find out what is coming up in terms of press releases and organisational announcements. It also gives me a chance to let the comms team know what has been happening in New Zealand and to get any advice or help around things I am stuck on.

2:30pm – 4:00pm

In the afternoon I usually have a quick catch up over the phone with the marketing events manager to go over any tasks I need to complete for any events that are coming up. This ranges from liaising with suppliers to organising who will attend and sending out invites. I often have a catch up with the New Zealand country manager to go over any work that I am doing for him, for example I am currently helping to write his speech for a large lunch event happening in a few weeks’ time.

4:00pm-4:30pm

Home time! I spend the last 30 minutes of my day replying to any urgent emails and packing up my desk. After work I head straight to the gym to let off some energy and clear my mind. I find working out regularly not only helps me physically but it is also a great way to help de-stress after a long day at work.

6:30pm

Dinner time! Currently I flat about a 25 minute walk or 10 minute bus ride from work. That’s the great thing about Wellington, the commute is not very long as you can often find affordable flats quite close to the CBD. I use dinner time as a way to catch up with my flatmates and watch some TV. Sometimes I will eat out with friends, Wellington has a huge range of amazing restaurants it’s impossible to resist!

7:30pm

Netflix time! I love watching some Netflix series to chill before bed. At the moment I’m obsessed with Suits, Dynasty and Riverdale. I will also have a quick call to catch up with Mum and Dad who live just an hour outside of the city.

9:30pm

My favourite time of day – bedtime. I like to have a semi-early night to get enough sleep in for a good week and to ensure I don’t snooze that alarm in the morning!
