The DLA Piper Story

For more than 15 years, DLA Piper has become synonymous with success, innovation, and understanding of the legal needs of its diverse clients. The giant law firm was formed courtesy of unification between Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich LLP, Piper Rudnick LLP, and DLA LLP.

In 2005, the same year DLA Piper was formed, it also created a non-profit affiliate. The affiliate firmly focused on channelling its lawyer's expertise for global benefit. Since its inception, the firm has delivered over 190,00 voluntary services actively serving the public with its innovative solicitors.

Throughout its years of operation, the firm has relied on building strong partnerships with its clients and including them in future development. This business strategy led DLA Piper to be named the second law firm in client service according to BTI client service in 2021.

Culture and Vibes

Being amongst the largest law firms worldwide, DLA Piper prides itself on a supportive, value-based culture. Despite its large size, they foster friendly, close-knit teams that never make the size an issue as everyone is easily approachable.

Wearing a value-based culture, DLA Piper develops trustworthy and cooperative relationships with other firms and between employees. At DLA Piper, it is common to see global collaboration between global partners and same-level sector growth throughout the company.

The atmosphere at DLA Piper is seamless, friendly, and supportive with everyone feeling valued, heard, and supported.

Recruitment Process

DLA Piper promotes diversity in skill, background, and talent orientation in its recruitment process to showcase the values they hold dear. Every graduate and internship applicant stands a chance in their recruitment process provided they’re inquisitive and passionate.

Graduate and internship applicants interested in positions in the firm are required to begin an online application by submitting a CV highlighting their experience and skills. After successfully submitting the CV, applicants are then required to answer a few commercial awareness questions,

Applicants who complete the online application are invited to try out a Watson Glaser Assessment. This assessment aims to measure critical thinking and logical reasoning levels among graduate and internship applicants.

Next, to complete the WG assessment, graduates and internship applicants are invited to a telephone interview. This interview is mainly conversational and just looks to highlight areas of professional/personal motivation for graduates and interns.

Finally, on-site assessments including skill-based interviews, analysis presentations, and group assessments are conducted for applicants who make it this far. For the on-site assessments, there is usually no preparation required as applicants show up what they have on the spot.

Selected applicants are put into a summer internship pipeline after which they are placed in further graduate training programmes.

Controversies

In early 2019, DLA Piper was embroidered in an infamous sexual assault allegation between two of the firm’s workers. This case started with allegations between one of the firm’s partners and another managing partner.

After the first accusation, two other victims came forward causing the managing partner of sexual and mental assault. In both cases, they claimed the firm tried to cover it up.

While DLA Piper suspended the two involved, they came up with arguments with all three accusers claiming a gang-up against the firm. While the case is still some way off being settled, DLA Piper is currently being accused of suppressing women who decide to speak up
