Culture at Canva

9.5
9.5 rating for Culture, based on 6 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
Everyones very friendly at the office, although depending on your team you may not get to see them IRL much. In terms of hierarchy, you don't know what level anyone is as it isn't shown, which can be confusing sometimes. The structure itself is also confusing, as there are so many terms, team, group, subgroup, supergruop, specialty, subspecialty... My team doesn't feel very cooperative, and I feel belittled. After hours they work overtime Socialising is pretty decent though, since theres a lot of events and clubs you can join for things you're interested in.

Canva has a strong culture of being kind and compassionate to one another, and there are very, very limited expectations to work outside of normal work hours (unless you are on-call - however this is an agreement between the employee and the team). My team has a fair bit of pair programming and collaborative work, however this can vary across teams. The hierarchal structure is not necessarily imposed very strongly at Canva, however sometimes senior leadership can seem a little bit further away. I am personally not too bothered about it - you can always Slack them specifically if you need, there are not necessarily many hoops to jump through to talk to them. There are also various Canva clubs (both remote and local-friendly), which provide great opportunities to get to know other Canvanauts, both in and outside your specialty.

I moved from Auckland to Sydney for this job and have quickly made tons of friend at work as everyone is very friendly and welcoming. In fact, one potential problem is that there's TOO much socialisation! However, you can always go to a quiet space if you'd like to get focused work time. There's also a constant and endless stream of after-work clubs for various interests from sports to food that make it incredibly easy to meet people.

The company structure is relatively flat, and places the employees at the top of the hierarchal tree. 'Coaches' (as opposed to managers) are not there to tell you what to do, but rather to empower you to do your best work in the areas that you're interested in.
