Finance graduates and those seeking internships with a finance degree have a vast array of choices on offer. The finance sector is growing quickly and as a result, students with a finance degree are highly sought after.
One of the big positives in completing a finance degree is that you’re in a fortunate position to be able to work in a wide variety of different industries or sectors. This can include opportunities in the public or private sector, with a plethora of roles available at major banks and financial institutions in New Zealand including household names like ANZ, Reserve Bank of New Zealand and Westpac. There's also a number of international employers who hire New Zealand graduates into their program, particularly Australian employers like Commonwealth Bank, Macquarie and UBS as the working rights are not an issue.
Banking and Finance graduates can normally expect a base salary starting from $55,000, however, this rapidly increases with bonuses and increasing salaries once you work your way up the ranks. Whilst finance professionals are always in high demand, jobs with the most prestigious firms are extremely competitive in New Zealand. Retail banks like ANZ will normally receive thousands of applications from eager graduates, for only a handful of roles. The same goes for investment banks like Macquarie and UBS. This can pose a major challenge, but once you’re able to get your foot in the door the payoff and salaries are rewarding.
