Bachelor (Honours)

This highly regarded interdisciplinary degree will engage you in both theory and practice, equipping you for a wide range of people-related work. The Bachelor of Social Work with Honours (BSW(Hons)) at UC is Aotearoa New Zealand's most established Social Work programme.

Recommended preparation

Entry to the first year of the BSW(Hons) is open to all students with entry to the University.

While no particular secondary school subjects are required, a background in subjects promoting communication skills such as English, history, geography, or te reo Maori is useful. Volunteer work in the community is also good preparation.

Doctorate (PhD)

The UC Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a research-only degree, carried out under expert supervision and using world-class facilities. At UC you can complete a PhD in over 70 subjects, joining over 1,000 students from more than 60 nations.
Entry Requirements

Enrolment in a PhD requires completion of a research-focused honours or master's degree, at First or Second Class (Division I) Honours or Distinction level (or equivalent qualifications).

Applicants with qualifications from outside Aotearoa New Zealand must have been granted admission to the University. Our admissions team, in consultation with the host department, look at your qualifications and transcripts to ensure that you have the background required to complete a PhD. It is possible that you may be required to complete preparatory courses prior to or after admission into a PhD programme.

In exceptional circumstances applicants without the typical academic background, but who can demonstrate the ability to pursue a PhD, may be admitted at the discretion of the Dean of Postgraduate Research.

Masters (Coursework)

Main Campus
The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MTESOL) is a one-year professional qualification aimed at producing skillful English language educators for a wide variety of educational settings in the 21st century, from early childhood through to tertiary level.
Entry Requirements

Students wishing to enrol in the MTESOL must have qualified for a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent degree (a B Grade Point Average in 300-level courses is normally expected). Relevant work experience will also be considered.

All students will need to be approved by the Dean of Education and Health Sciences.

The Master of Strategic Communication (MStratCom) prepares students for careers in complex, professional media for corporations, public relations, and advocacy.

Students should have achieved at least a B Grade Point Average in 300-level courses in their undergraduate degree, or have relevant professional work experience to the satisfaction of the Head of Department and the Dean of Arts (Academic).

Masters (Coursework)

The Master of Social Work (Applied) offers the opportunity for students with an approved social science degree to complete a recognised professional qualification over two years.
Entry Requirements

Students must have completed any bachelor's degree with a B Grade Point Average in their 300-level courses, and have completed either courses in social research and human development, or have relevant practice experience or another qualifying programme.

How to apply

The programme has a limited number of places available, and prospective students must complete a formal application to the Social Work department, in addition to their application to enrol.

Late applications for February 2021 entry to the programme can be made up until November 30th 2020. After this date, further late applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Masters (Coursework)

Main Campus
The Master of Social Work degree requires candidates to complete a thesis on a full or part-time basis. The MSW is particularly aimed at practitioners with specialist practice, supervisory, management, or policy analysis and development responsibilities.
Entry Requirements

The MSW is accessible only to those students who have obtained a professional qualification in Social Work. This means they will have completed fieldwork requirements. For more details, contact Tauwhiro Hapori | Department of Social Work. Students who do not have a professional qualification in Social Work may instead consider the Master of Social Work (Applied).

To enrol in the MSW, students must have completed one of the following:

  • a Bachelor of Social Work with First Class or Second Class Honours Division I
  • any bachelor's degree and the Graduate Diploma in Social Work
  • any bachelor's degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work with a B+ Grade Point Average or above (or equivalent)
  • completed a qualifying course prescribed by the Head of the Department of Social Work and Human Services, and approved by the Dean of Arts (Academic) of a standard to the prerequisite courses.

To enrol, you will need a bachelor's degree in any subject, normally with at least a B Grade Point Average in 60 points of 300-level courses in the majoring subject, or other equivalent qualifications.

All students will also need approval from the Programme Director and the Dean of Arts (Academic).
